Stitching
The most obvious way to tell a real Chanel from a fake is the quality of the pattern and the symmetry of the stitching. Real Chanel bags are most often made from soft lambskin, caviar leather, or calfskin, which creates distinctive and impeccable diamond-shaped patterns. On some Chanel bags, such as the 2.55, you must check the back pocket of the bag to make sure that the quilted pattern of the back pocket matches the pattern on the bag itself. If the patterns do not match, you probably have a fake on your hands.
Quality and Number of Stitches
Chanel bags have a high number of stitches, and most often there should be 10 stitches or more per edge of the quilting. While the exact number of stitches varies from bag to bag, if you find a low number of stitches per diamond, you may be dealing with a fake. Leather and Lining
As with any luxury leather goods piece, the material itself is a reliable indicator. From 2021 onward: Chanel has abandoned the dated hologram sticker in favor of an integrated NFC chip, readable only by official retailers. The absence of a sticker on a recent bag is therefore no longer, by itself, a warning sign — on the contrary, it is expected on the most recent pieces.
The bag’s year of manufacture is therefore determined by the number of digits in the serial number. If the serial number has eight digits, it was produced from 2005 to 2021. And if it has seven digits, the production year is determined by the first digit. If the serial number does not follow the table above or has more than eight digits, it is probably a fake.
The Look of the Sticker and the Authenticity Card
Sometimes, hologram stickers come off vintage or pre-owned Chanel bags, but that does not mean they are fake. You can usually recognize adhesive residue from the sticker where it used to be. Fake bags may also have fake hologram stickers, but they come off easily. Fakes lack detail. Chanel has detail in its holograms.
Counterfeiters have become very clever and can create a serial number that matches the chart, which is why you should also focus on the look of the sticker. Authentic serial number stickers feature a combination of CC logo marks and an X shape cut into the tape to prevent removal with damage, as well as small reflective specks. On stickers introduced in the 2000s, gold glitter should be visible, distributed naturally — not too large, not too uniform, not too concentrated in one spot — and a red line should appear under ultraviolet light.
Every authentic bag comes with an authenticity card bearing exactly the same number as the inner sticker. If the two numbers do not match, or if the card is not of the same quality as the rest (crisp gold lettering, careful embossing), be cautious — it being understood that the absence of a card, by itself, is not unusual on a vintage bag whose card may have been misplaced over the years.
